Baxter Youth Conservation Corps
The Baxter Youth Conservation Corps is a job training and service learning opportunity for youth from the Katahdin Region. This program gives youth the opportunity to work with professional leaders on trail projects in Baxter State Park. Participants will gain valuable training, job skills, and work experience in a spectacular wilderness setting. Participants will earn an hourly wage (currently $14/hour) and may also receive community service hours for potential school credit. Students currently enrolled in one of the following Katahdin region high schools are eligible to apply for the program:
Katahdin High School
Schenck High School
Stearns High School
Southern Aroostook High School
Homeschool students residing in one of the school districts listed above
Please note: Applicants under the age of 16 must obtain a stamped, approved work permit from the State of Maine before they may participate in the program.
Friends doubled the size of this program in 2018, offering 20 full-time positions for local youth and adding a northern crew based in Patten. Our crews accomplished a staggering amount of work during a month in the Park - including installing 100 stepping stones and seven bog bridges, blazing 6.2 miles of trail, and completing more than 14 miles of corridor work. To top if off, they constructed an entirely new 1.5 mile trail on land owned by BSP in the town of Mount Chase. This new trail is already open to the public.
In 2019, the Baxter Youth Conservation Corps is expanding by an additional 50%, to six weeks in total. The program will take place from July 8 - August 16, with crews based in both Millinocket and Patten. Each crew will work for three weeks. We anticipate that the southern crew will work from July 8 - 26, and the northern crew from July 29 - August 16. Thanks to a new partnership with Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters, the northern crew based in Patten will spend one of its weeks working on the Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument.
