After careful consideration, Baxter State Park has announced some changes to its 2020 season in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Park will remain open for walk-in day use below treeline, but will be closed to camping, vehicular access, and travel above treeline until further notice. The Park has established a target opening date of July 1. All camping and day use parking reservations affected by this change will be cancelled, and BSP staff will contact all those impacted to transfer or refund reservations. Please see the press release below for details.
Twenty years ago, Friends of Baxter State Park was founded by a group of citizens who shared a passion for the park’s immense wilderness and gratitude for the sanctuary it provides to the people of Maine. Even in these uncertain times, we remain committed to our mission today: to preserve, support, and enhance the wilderness character of Baxter State Park in the spirit of its founder, Governor Percival Baxter. As we are separated from the people and the places that matter to us most, we take comfort in the knowledge that our most beloved wilderness is still there and is flourishing, waiting for our next adventure. Over the next several months, we will continue to communicate with the Baxter State Park Authority and provide you with the latest park updates and planning information to ensure that you have a safe visit.
