Wilderness Preservation

In 2004, the Friends asked noted Maine educator and wilderness advocate Dr. Dean Bennett to spe ak at our Annual Meeting in April. Dr. Bennett, born and raised in western Maine, is professor emeritus at the University of Maine at Farmington. He has devoted much of his professional life to teaching and writing in the fields of science and
environmental education, natural history, and human relationships with nature. He has also been active in advocating for wilderness preservation and serves on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Advisory Council. His books include: Allagash: Maine’s Wild and Scenic River (1994), a natural history, and The Wilderness from Chamberlain Farm: A Story of Hope for the American Wild (2001), a history of the Allagash wildlands. Bennett has canoed the Allagash since 1962 and he continues to write and illustrate books.
